How to Run a Darts Tournament: Formats, Brackets and Scoring

Running a darts tournament comes down to three decisions: the format, how long each match is, and how matches get to the boards. Get those right and the night runs itself. Here's how to choose.

Choose a format

FormatMatches for 16 playersGood for
Single elimination15Short nights; one loss and you're out
Double elimination30 (31 with a reset final)Fairer knockouts; everyone gets a second chance
Round robin120Small groups where everyone should play everyone
Swiss32 (4 rounds of 8)Big fields; players meet similar records each round
Groups into a knockoutDepends on group sizeLeagues and big nights: guaranteed games, then a final

A rule of thumb: in single elimination a field of N players needs N − 1 matches; double elimination needs about twice that; round robin needs N × (N − 1) ÷ 2, which grows fast.

Set the match length

A leg of 501 between pub players often takes somewhere around five to ten minutes. Best of 3 legs keeps a 16-player knockout to an evening on two or three boards; save best of 5 or 7 for the semi-finals and final.

Seeding and byes

Seed the strongest players so they're spread across the draw. When the number of players isn't a power of two (8, 16, 32), some first-round slots are empty: those players get a bye into round two, and byes go to the top seeds.

In double elimination, byes leave gaps in the losers' bracket too. The Darts App handles them for you, so every match that can be played gets played.

Boards and scorers

  • Call matches to boards as boards come free, and don't call a player who's still playing.
  • Let each board's scorer enter the darts, so results reach the bracket the moment a leg ends.
  • Put the bracket on a TV or a shared link so players know when they're up.

Tie-breaks in round robin and groups

Rank by matches won, then leg difference (legs won minus legs lost), then legs won, then the result between the tied players. Agree this before the first dart so nobody argues at the end.

Questions

How many matches are in a 16-player darts knockout?

15 in single elimination; 30 in double elimination, or 31 if the grand final is reset.

What's the fairest darts tournament format?

Round robin, where everyone plays everyone, but it takes the longest. Groups into a knockout and double elimination are fair alternatives for bigger fields.
